How to Build a Backlink Network to Help Rank in Google

How to Build a Backlink Network to Help Rank in Google” written by Mike Marko.

If you have been following me over the past few weeks, you know that Bren and I have been successfully promoting the IPAS2 system.  To help promote it, I have been doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to rank in the top three spots in Google for several keyword phrases related to the IPAS 2 System.

I have already talked about the difference between on-page and off-page SEO.

In this blog post I want to talk more about how to build a backlink network that will help you improve your chances of ranking in Google.

How to Build a Backlink Network

Step one when learning how to build a backlink network is… identify what page you want to rank in Google.

This page should be setup with good on-page SEO, and contains tons of good content, is visually appealing, and generally invites people to read it.  You don’t want people to have a bad first impression.

First Step in How to Build a Backlink Network – Tier 1

Next we built a tier 1 backlink, or a backlink that points directly to the page we want to rank, as shown in the diagram below.

Write a 600+ word article to put the backlink in.  I like keep to the topic that is related to the target page because sometimes those pages will rank too, but it isn’t necessary.  Make sure to include the keyword you want to help rank for in the article.

SpinRewriter 5 Review - Article Spinning Software 2Next I use an article spinner, like SpinRewriter (here is my affiliate link), to spin the article up to 30 times.  I spin it up to 30 times so that it can be used up to 30 times on different websites before having to create a new article.

Then I post the spun article on a Web 2.0 site, like Blogger or WordPress.  Web 2.0’s should be included in your backlink portfolio because they have more credibility.   You want to minimize any “weak” or “junk” backlinks to the page you are trying to rank because they could hurt your ranking if they are done in excess.  If it doesn’t look natural, or likely, from natural backlinking then it has a higher chance of being penalized.

Now link to the target article from the post.  There are different ways to link to the target article.  You need to vary this up as much as possible to make it appear natural to Google.  The different ways are:

1)  Naked URL.  This is your full website address right in the article.  (e.g. “http://mikemarko.net/what-is-ipas-2/”)

2)  Brand Anchors.  This is where you use your brand name in the anchor text.  Google gives priority to a site with obvious branding.  (e.g. “Bren and Mike”)

3)  Different Variations of Keywords in Anchor Text.  This is where you vary up the text used to link to the target site.  Don’t just use the keyword phrase in your anchor text because that doesn’t look natural.  (e.g. “IPAS 2” and “click here for more”)

4) Hyperlinked Images.  This method is often overlooked, but people love to click on images.  Therefore it is a huge advantage to you to hyperlink all images.  These hyperlinks can either become backlinks to your target page, or links to lead capture pages.

Second Step in How to Build a Backlink Network – Tier 2 & Tier 3

The next stage is to build up the tier 2 and tier 3 backlinks.  The purpose of these backlinks is to shore up the strength, or increase the link juice, of the tier 1 backlink.  These axillary backlinks don’t have to be “solid” backlinks, and they can include social bookmarks and other poorer backlinks,  The tier 1 backlink acts as a buffer to the page you are trying to rank, so if one type of backlink gets heavily penalized then that hit will be buffered by the tier 1 backlink.

To manually build tier 2 and tier 3 backlinks can be very tedious.  That is why I use LinkEmperor (here is my affiliate link) to create these backlinks and continually adding to these backlinks over time.

You want to keep building backlinks to the page you’re trying to rank.  If the backlinking stops, then the content may appear outdated to Google, and fall out of favor.
