How to Blog – 3 Things to Do Right AFTER You’re Done Writing a Blog Post

Ok, you just wrote an amazing blog post.  It looks perfect.  You have shared great content, and embedded great pictures and maybe even a video.  But now what?

Blogging is one of the best ways to add regular content to your website, and help you with marketing and promoting your products.  But how to get people actually see your blog post, especially if you are just getting started?

Prevent Great Content From Going Unnoticed After Writing a Blog Post

When you hit the “publish” button, the world doesn’t suddenly see your blog post.  In fact, the odds are that after writing your blog post very few people may see it if you don’t do any follow up.  Otherwise the only people are going to see it are you and your RSS subscribers.

Sure after a while, a search engine spider may happen upon your blog post.  But that doesn’t mean you’ll rank in Google high enough to be seen.  In order to be read, your post has to rank in the top five if not top three in a search otherwise it will not be discovered in a Google search.

So don’t rely on search engines and a handful of subscribers to pump up your organic volume.  When you are writing your blog post, you need to have establish a plan for target promotion and syndication to ensure the blog post gets noticed by your target audience and ideal customers.

The following are some things you can do after writing a blog post to make sure you get eyes on it.

1. SEO and Keyword Integration When Writing a Blog Post

Even if you have the best content in the world, search engines may not rank your blog post unless you choose good keywords.  Use Google Adwords free keyword suggestion tool to help you pick out good keywords for your blog post.  Ideally you do this before writing your blog post, but it is ok to go after the fact and beef things up a bit.   A little bit of onpage SEO can go a long way to helping people find your blog post.

2. Shorten the Post’s URL

I didn’t realize how important this was until recently.  In the past I was guilty of having long URL’s (or also known as website addresses).  Try to keep the total URL length to below 115 characters.  This will make it easier to post in other sites without looking too cumbersome, and it may offer some SEO value as well.

You can further shorten your URL by using a URL shortening service.  This can be a good strategy if the shortening service also provides analytics (and many do).  The URL shortening service should not affect the SEO because most of them use “301 redirect” to forward users to the full URL.  This type of redirect tells browsers and search engines that they should permanently redirect to the new site, so the PageRank of the URL is transferred just fine.  You just don’t get the benefit of using quality anchor text.

However, Twitter uses a nofollow tag to prevent spamming.  This means Google will not follow Twitter made links or transfer any PageRank no matter what kind of ULR they use.

That all being said, placing a shortened URL on any of your social sites can be a smart strategy for tracking purposes.  Here’s how it works:

  • Copy your new blog post’s URL and paste it into the URL shortener that offers analytics (eg. Bit.ly, Cli.gs, Ow.ly).
  • Copy the shortened URL and past it into any social updates, etc.
  • Check up on your URL’s statistics after your link has been up for a while.

3. Syndication

One of most powerful and often misunderstood mechanisms of a blog is its RSS feed.  This really simple syndication method allows you to automatically feed your blog content to many different sites, including many social media sites.

The RSS feed URL is entered into your social networking sites or profiles.  Then by hitting “publish” on your new blog post, it initiates introducing the content to those sites.  This can significantly reduce the time to syndicate your blog post.  The best part is that you only have to set it up once per site.

First locate  your blog RSS URL (often it is the blog address plus “/feed”.  For instance for this blog it is http://mikemarko.net/blog/feed/.  Then do the following:

LinkedIn Personal Profile – Look for “Blog Link” or “WordPress” in the applications section on your profile page and set it up to auto-post your content to your LinkIn Profile.  If you can get your friends and colleges to do this as well, it will help increase your reach.

Facebook Business Page – In your applications section, look for the “Social RSS” application and get it set up to publish your content to your Facebook page wall automatically.

Automating Syndication on Steroids

I personally like to use the syndication tool, OnlyWire, to publish my blog posts to my syndication sites.  Using the RSS feed, it will syndicate your blog post to 40+ sites.  It will also stagger the syndication so that it seems more natural.  I also use this tool to help syndicate my YouTube videos as well.  You have to create the syndication site accounts, but once you do you’ll love the automation that this does for you for a very reasonable price.  I have found that it substantially helps increase traffic to the blog posts PLUS it creates much needed backlinks as well.
