How to SEO WordPress

One of the first things you should know about how to SEO WordPress is that it’s actually pretty easy. You see, WordPress itself helps you along.

This is easily one of the most user-friendly platforms on which to build a website or blog. As a result, you don’t have to be super-familiar with tech or web development to do SEO on it.

The beauty of that is, you can get started on how to SEO WordPress sites yourself even if you’re a small business owner on a budget. After all, you won’t have to hire a company just for the task.

Provided you’re ready and willing to learn, you should discover how to SEO WordPress  your business’s website yourself pretty easily.

So without further ado, let’s get started with how to SEO WordPress websites!
Take a Look at Your Content

Content is a big deal in SEO. Both search engines like Google and search engine users consider it in their searches…

And both of them want quality content.

Thus, you should take a look at your site’s content as soon as possible if you want to learn how to SEO WordPress. Check it for readability, originality, and value to the user.

Moreover, you want to check it for its relevance to your business and customers. There’s no point in publishing content that has nothing to do with your niche or your target audience’s interests.

Make sure that it’s only ever about topics that your target customers want to read. That helps users as well as search engines get a good handle on what your site is about.

You should also work to ensure that it’s written in a way that readers can get through it. If you make your content too complicated, for instance, why should you expect visitors to want to slog through it?

Part of that is ensuring that you don’t overstuff it with keywords. Keywords are words or phrases that describe your content, in a nutshell.

Both search engines and users use them. Search engines analyze the keywords on a site to get a sense of what it’s about and users type them into search engines to find websites.

Using a good number of relevant keywords is thus helpful when you’re learning how to SEO WordPress sites. However, using too many of them is also frowned upon, because it can make your content look awkward if they’re used injudiciously.

You can learn more about this in my article on SEO tips and tricks. For now, suffice it to say that you can’t learn how to SEO WordPress without paying attention to your content and keywords.

Keep the Content Coming

This is another aspect of how to SEO WordPress content. You see, active sites that post a stream of new content steadily are likelier to get attention from search engines and users alike.

Obviously, that means you need to keep content coming if you want to learn how to SEO WordPress effectively.

Google itself expressly favors regularly-updated sites over static ones. That’s because they’re ostensibly more current and more likely to be up-to-date in their information.

My advice? Post at least 2 times per week on your website. If you can do it more often than that, go ahead!

Just keep in mind what I said about the quality of your content, though. Don’t try to post content that’s low-value just so you can say you posted “new content”.

Start Building Your Backlinks

Another thing to think about if you want to learn how to SEO WordPress is how to build your backlink profile.

Backlinks are links that lead from other websites’ pages to your website. They basically look like referrals to search engines and users, indicating a vote of confidence for your site’s content.

If you have great content, you won’t have to worry too much about this. That’s because great content naturally accumulates backlinks from others (hence its inclusion in this list of tips for how to SEO WordPress).

But if you want to boost your backlink building, you can also exchange links with other sites. Ask other webmasters with sites related to your niche if they would be willing to link to yours.

You can also build your internal link structure to further help your SEO. That just means linking related pages on your own website to each other.

It can help visitors navigate your website, which is always good as far as search engines are concerned. Backlinks are arguably still more important in how to SEO WordPress sites for better SERP ranking, though.

Want more pointers on this? I’ve written about it before in an article on how to get backlinks for websites.

Optimize Your Visual Media

So we’ve talked about how to SEO WordPress in terms of content and link optimization. Now we have to talk about how to optimize images.

Images and other visual media are important for every site. Great images tend to get people’s attention, after all.

That’s why you need to make sure your visuals are in line with your SEO strategy. Make sure they are relevant to your topics and your niche.

You also need to make sure that they have alt text for it. This is also called a title.

Google considers alt text when ranking websites. Thus, it’s always better to make sure your images have alt text that describes them and provides a keyword that lets the search engine know what they’re about.

Besides, it isn’t just about how to SEO WordPress. It also improves your site’s accessibility — those with visual impairment will be able to access it this way.

Fix Your Permalinks

Your pages’ permalinks or URLs should be in order if you want to learn how to SEO WordPress. The best permalinks are ones that immediately tell you what you’ll find on them.

For example, the permalink to this page has the keyword “how to SEO WordPress” in it. That tells users and search engines at a glance what the page will contain.

Generally, you want to use keywords in your permalinks. Don’t succumb to the temptation to put several in there, though, as overly long permalinks aren’t a good idea.

They’re hard to remember and understand, you see. Furthermore, only the first 4 or so words in a permalink are of genuine importance to search engines, so permalinks with a lot of words are wasted.

Use Optimized Themes

One of the things you get used to employing on WordPress would be the “theme”. Most people use them instead of building sites entirely from scratch now.

That’s okay, really. But you have to understand that some themes aren’t great for SEO.

It may be because they don’t perform or load very quickly. It may also be because they don’t look very attractive or make sense organization-wise.

Whatever the case, you need to evaluate your theme to learn how to SEO WordPress. Take a close look at your site’s theme to see if it needs updating or replacement.

Generally speaking, I tell people learning how to SEO WordPress sites to check the codes of their chosen themes. The leaner and lighter a theme’s code is, the better in most cases.

To identify if a theme is fast-performing or not, you can look up on their codes. Some themes use a lot of codes to create the layout and design.

That’s because it tends to eat up a lot of space when a theme’s code is heavy. It may even slow down your website — and page speed is a ranking factor for Google, keep in mind.

Put Up a Sitemap

This is another requirement when you study how to SEO WordPress. XML sitemaps help search engines like Google figure out your site’s structure and the content it should index and rank.

Fortunately, there are tons of tools that can help you with this task in how to SEO WordPress. In fact, there’s a plugin for Google XML Sitemaps you can install to do most of the work.

Do Social Media Marketing

Wondering what this has to do with how to SEO WordPress sites? Well, you can promote your posts and pages on social media, which can help boost your traffic and overall SEO.

Some social media posts are now being indexed by search engines, after all. Besides, even if your post on social media doesn’t get indexed, it still helps build awareness of your content.

My advice for how to SEO WordPress sites by using social media is to install plugins to make the task easier. For instance, you can install plugins on your site that let visitors share it with others on their social media accounts too.
