If you are like most people you probably participate in some kind of superstitious thinking.
Would you feel bad if you broke a mirror?
Do you knock on wood or cross your fingers?

It turns out the average person is superstitious enough to avoid walking under a ladder.
This is a picture of the entrance to my gym where I work out almost every day.
Today right in front of the check-in desk there was this giant ladder.
You pretty much had to go under it to check in.
What did most people do?
They went all the away around and reached across to give the person at the desk their check in card.
From what the people at the desk were saying this was happening all morning. Very rarely would someone attempt to go under the ladder even though there was plenty of room.
Based On Statistics
This is in line with a Gallup poll that says more than half of Americans admitted to being at least a little superstitious.
Why is this?
Do Superstitions Help?
There are a few reasons people practice superstitious thinking and why it might be beneficial
It’s a way to feel more in control– Say you’re going for a job interview and you’ve done everything you can possibly do to prepare. You’ve dressed appropriately. You’ve researched the company. You arrive on time.
Having that lucky coin in your pocket is just one more thing you can do to help.
This can act as a placebo effect and help you believe that luck is on your side. Belief is powerful. There is one study where people were given a golf ball and asked to make 10 putts. Half were told that the ball was lucky and these people made 35% more successful putts than the others did.
If you think something will help you, it may actually help you. Because you believe it can.
It boosts confidence and reduces tension. Studies show “Engaging in superstitious thoughts and behaviors may be one way to reach top levels of performance,” because it eases anxiety and reduces tension. Just knowing you have that lucky coin in your pocket helps to calm your nerves and this puts you in a flow where you can think more clearly and perform at your peak.
Final Thoughts on Superstitions
So the next time you find yourself crossing your fingers or knocking on wood you’re actually doing yourself a favor by increasing confidence level and reducing tension.
