Are you looking to learn how to improve your Alexa ranking?

I know that for many bloggers, Alexa is a metric to monitor regularly (at least at the beginning). It gives you a way to follow your progress from the start, because it updates every day. You don’t have to wait for your blog for other monitoring sites like Moz SEO.

That’s why I’m going to both talk about your Alexa Ranking and suggest ways how to improve your Alexa ranking.

What Is Your Alexa Ranking Mean?

In the following video I talk about the Alexa ranking, and how to install the Alexa toolbar.

Before we can talk about how to improve your Alexa ranking, we first need to investigate what is your Alexa ranking represent.

What Is Alexa?

Alexa is a service that ranks millions of websites by their popularity. If you rank #1, it means your website is the most popular site on the internet. Google, Facebook, and YouTube are typically in the top three.

As a rough rule of thumb, there are approximately 20 million sites on the internet. That means if you made it to the top 200,000, you are 1%. Or in other words 200,000 website would be more popular than yours… which is pretty good.

Alexa tracks user behavior using their toolbar. The Alexa toolbar is installed on people’s browser. Alexa then knows how many people visited your site, and how much time they spent on it. This information is then used to rank your website relative to other websites.

The Inherent Flaw of the Alexa Ranking

Now since Alexa uses its toolbar to know who visited your website, it can’t track all web surfers.

Chances are that people who do have the toolbar installed are probably either webmasters or website owners looking to improve their metrics. A blog can be getting 10,000 visitors a day but if many are only casual visitors then maybe only 5% have the toolbar. That means in this example Alexa will only register 500 visitors a day. This means that the rank is not very accurate. Fortunately the good news is that the Alexa score is pretty easy to lower.

Does Your Alexa Ranking Influence SEO?

So can your Alexa ranking have any effect on your SEO (search engine optimization)?

Absolutely not!

Google ranks websites on the basis of maximum backlinks and traffic (traffic not necessarily measured by the Alexa toolbar). There is no direct correlation between your Alexa score and your ranking in search engines. It’s just a myth.

How to Improve Your Alexa Ranking

Now there are people that put weight into the Alexa ranking. If you don’t have a very good Alexa score they may not take you credibly (you can’t educate everyone on how misleading this score is). Therefore I’m going to list several ways you can use to manipulate your Alexa ranking.

1.) Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your blog as your homepage. (you can get it via chrome store). Remember that when you visit your own website with the Alexa toolbar it will also improve your score.

2.) Write content that will help webmasters (whom typically have the toolbar). Then promote your blog content on social networking websites and webmaster forums. You’ll get webmasters to visit your website and offer useful feedback.

3.) Post your website link in webmaster forums. Not only will you get more webmasters to visit your website, but it’s also a good way to give back to the community assuming you have useful articles to share with other website owners/managers.

4.) Create blog posts about Alexa. Webmaster and bloggers love to hear about ways to increase their Alexa rank. They’ll probably link to your content and send you targeted traffic.

5.) Use ways to increase your website traffic using paid banner ads, Google, social media, SEO, and content marketing like blogging, press release, article distributions, etc.

6.) Claim Your Site on Alexa website. While you don’t “need” Alexa Pro, it will help improve improve the accuracy of your Alexa ranking results.

7.) Create regular content for your blog. And also post quality content on other blogs with links going back to your root URL. This is a great long term strategy that will take gradually help improve your score.

8.) Put up an Alexa rank widget on your website. Many people say that clicks to this widget counts as visits to your website even if they don’t have the Alexa toolbar installed.

Final Words On How to Improve Your Alexa Ranking

Implement as many of these tips as possible to help improve your Alexa ranking. While the Alexa score isn’t a very accurate method of measuring website traffic, there are those that will “judge” yourwebsite because of your Alexa score… that means that it probably deserves at least a little consideration.
