“How to Promote a Blog Post: 6 Things to Do After You Publish a Post” written by Mike Marko.
Today I got the question, “What do you do after you publish a blog post” to get it ranked in Google and get traffic.
It was a good question. Most people who have blogs don’t know how to promote a blog post.
Approximately a year ago I wrote two blog posts on the subject: How to Blog – 3 Things to Do Right AFTER You’re Done Writing a Blog Post and How to Blog – 6 MORE Things to Do Right AFTER You’re Done Writing a Blog Post.
Since then I have evolved in my methods (and gotten somewhat lazy) and developed new methods that work well and help get us ranked.
And that is the topic of today’s blog post.
How to Promote a Blog Post
Ok, you published your blog post. Now what? I’m going to use what I do to tell you how to promote a blog post and get traffic to your blog.
Step 1 – Let OnlyWire Do It’s Job
I am a HUGE fan of automation. And since we publish content daily, anything we can do to reduce work is a huge blessing.
When we started using OnlyWire, our traffic started to increase. OnlyWire is a tool that does social bookmarking and creates backlinks to your blog posts. You can have social bookmarks on up to 50 different sites (you do have to setup the sites in the beginning).
Not only did OnlyWire help some of our content start to rank, but we also got traffic from some of the platforms we used.
Step 2 – Use Webmaster Tools
I like to make sure Google and Bing know right away after I post a blog post to crawl it.
Step 3 – Ping the Blog
While you can ping blog posts, I usually have the blog automatically setup to do this. But sometimes for more important blog posts I’ll ping them separately to help them show up sooner. Sometimes, I’ll have to re-ping them in a week to help “wake” them from the Google bounce.
The following are what I usually use to ping a blog post:
Site Google index: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url?continue=/addurl
Submit Your Site to Bing: http://www.bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url
Index Kings: http://www.indexkings.com/
Step 4 – Blog Syndication
Join a blog syndication group, or create one. A blog syndication group is where you comment on blog posts of other bloggers, in exchange you get a roughly equal number of comments on your blog post.
There are several reasons why you want to join a blog syndication group:
- Most blog commenting systems allow you to put in your website address. This acts as a backlink back to your blog.
- When people comment on your blog their comments have some SEO weight as they link back to their blog posts (if your comment system allows this).
- You have social proof on your blog because you have comments, thus showing your content is worth reading.
- If you carefully insert keywords when you reply to comments you gain SEO benefits from the comments.
Step 5 – Update Older Blog Posts
You can go back to some of your older blog posts on a similar topic and have them reference the new blog post. These older blog posts have had a chance to “age” and build up backlinks, and so have some SEO juice to share with the newer blog post.
Step 6 – Add Additional Backlinks
I usually don’t add additional backlinks to blog posts unless I really want to rank a particular post. A lot of times it isn’t worth the extra effort to create backlinks in addition to the ones I created with OnlyWire.
But for those special blog posts that you want to have some extra help, check out this article on building blog networks.
Final Words on How to Promote a Blog Post
Don’t get worried if you don’t have time to do all these steps. To be honest, I don’t always do them myself. As you build up your blog, Google will crawl your site and find your content.
But if you want to speed things up, or give blog posts some extra help getting ranked, these steps are great to speeding up the process of building up your organic blog traffic.
