SEO 101 – What Are Backlinks?

We have been covering a lot on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) lately in our blog. It is one of the least expensive ways of driving long term traffic to your website. I also really enjoy learning about SEO and so I am always on the quest for more information. And as I learn more on SEO, I will share it with you on our blog.

An important part of SEO is your backlinks. Backlinks, also known as inbound links or one way links, are simply hyperlinks to your website that are originating from another website. Since visitors are the main part of any website, these backlinks help your blog/website to be promoted easily to get more visitors. Not only do visitors get to your website by clicking on these backlinks, but these backlinks are considered by search engines like Google to help determine how relevant your material is for a particular search.

What Are the Types of Backlinks?

Without going into a large amount of detail, here is a list of the types of backlinks though this list is by no means exhaustive:

  • Social Bookmarks (e.g. Digg, Reddit, Delicious)
  • Blogs (e.g. your personal blog, guest blogging, blog comments)
  • Web 2.0’s (e.g. free WordPress blog, Blogger, Squidoo, Hubpages)
  • Social Media (e.g. Facebook, Google+)
  • Forum Profiles/Signatures
  • In Context Links (links from articles as references)
  • Videos (on your channel and in video descriptions)
  • Directories
  • Press Releases

What Types of Backlinks Should I Use?

There is no perfect answer for this… other than to say all of them.

You need to have a mix of all types of backlinks to give a more natural look to your website backlinking. If you focus on only one or two types of backlinks, it will look unnatural to Google and you may be penalized. If you focus on only Social Media backlinks they won’t carry the same weight as Web 2.0’s or high authority backlinks.

How Do You Create Backlinks?

There are several ways to get backlinks to your webpages (remember that Google ranks webpages and not websites). These include:

Backlinks from Your Readers

If you create great content, your readers will naturally want to share it with their friends and colleagues. This is great way to get backlinks… but the only problem is that this will take a long time before you see results. Still this shouldn’t discourage you because IMO this is the best type of backlink because it has a lot of staying power with Google.

Backlinks You Manually Create

You can create your own backlinks. This can be internally from inside your website… if you don’t backlink your own pages internal to your website then why would Google think your content is worth ranking?

Manually created backlinks can also be from auxiliary websites that you create with content that have links to your webpages. This takes time to manually build up, but it is the next best thing to backlinks from your readers.

I do this with my own webpages.

Backlinks You Automatically Create

You can’t backlink all your pages manually to rank in Google AND have time for anything else. This is why I use some tools to help me build my backlinks.

I use OnlyWire to automatically create social media links and book marks to my blog posts as soon as they are published. It will publish these backlinks to up to 50 locations that you preset up. It will also stagger the publishing so that it seems more natural.

For the pages that I want to make sure rank, I use Link Emperor. It is a great tool that not only creates one layer of backlinks associated to your keywords for the article, but it will also create a second tier of backlinks to those sites as well to help give your links more significance, or “link juice.”

Putting It All Together

By using a variety of different types of backlinks which are created by visitors, by yourself, and using tools, you will help your webpages rank in Google and other search engines. Backlinking is an important part of your SEO strategy.

Here’s to your future success blogging!
