A Quick Guide to Twitter 101 for Business

What Is Twitter?

Twitter is one of the most commonly used social media platforms today. Most people who are on Twitter use it to quickly share their thoughts and views on various topics.

The platform is also considered as a microblogging site due to the status updates that are referred to as “tweets.” These tweets make sharing content to a wider audience faster.

Basic Twitter Terminologies

The first part of our Twitter 101 for business is for you to know the basic terms used on the platform.

A tweet is a status update. Before, users are only limited to 140 characters.

However, on November 2017, Twitter changed the character limit to 280 characters.

Retweet

Also known as RT, this is sharing a tweet by a particular user. You can share their tweet as is or you can also add a comment to your retweet through the “Quote Tweet” option.

Mention

Mention is like “tagging” on other social media platforms. This is when you mention a Twitter username to notify them of something.

All you need to do is type the @ symbol followed by the Twitter user’s username.

Hashtag

Hashtags are very popular on Twitter. A hashtag is a keyword or a phrase (with no spaces) with a # symbol.

The purpose of hashtags is to collect and sort out tweets that are related to a specific topic.

If you want to see latest updates on a certain topic, you can search for it using the hashtag.

Trending Topic

On Twitter, a trending topic is also referred to as “trends.” This could be a topic about a place, thing, person, or an idea. Whatever it may be, it’s trending simply because it’s currently being discussed by a lot of users on the platform.

Some businesses on the platform use hashtags to promote their brand. However, hashtags are not really that necessary to make a topic trend on the platform.

Direct Message (DM)

This is the messaging feature of Twitter. Basically, it’s a private conversation between you and a user.

Followers/Following

Your followers are those who follow your account. Your followers will see your updates on their home feed.

The ones you follow are the ones who appear on your “Following” list on your profile. You’ll be able to see their posts on your feed.

Unfollow

This is the same as unfriending someone on other social media platforms. Once you unfollow a Twitter user, you will no longer see their tweets.

However, if the user you unfollowed is still following you, your tweets will still appear on their feed.

Mute

There will be a time when you’ll find a user annoying on Twitter. It happens!

Instead of unfollowing a user, you can just mute the user. By doing so, you won’t be able to see their regular updates on their feed.

By muting them, it saves you from hurting someone’s feelings when you unfollow them.

Block

The block feature works the same for most social media platforms today. By blocking someone, you won’t be able to see them at all on the platform.

However, on Twitter, the user you blocked will be informed that you’ve blocked them when they view your profile.

On the other hand, if you’re the one who blocked a user, you’ll still be able to view their tweets by going to their profile and clicking on “View Tweets.”

Why Use Twitter

Twitter is a great social media platform where anyone can read, write, and share content. This is the main reason why businesses should consider it for their business.

It also provides real-time information and the platform updates upon the command of the user.

Twitter is also accessible on various devices. It also features important functions that you’ll need to engage or communicate with other users on the platform and in the trends.

Communication on Twitter

There are a number of ways to communicate with other users on Twitter. The simplest way is by posting a tweet.

Another way to communicate on Twitter is through direct messages. However, you have to keep in mind that you can only send a message to users who follow you. Or the ones who will accept your message requests.

You can also mention a user in a tweet. All you have to do is type their username after the @ symbol.

Here’s an example:

Hello, @username!

You can also communicate or interact with users by retweeting their tweets.

Advantages of Using Twitter for Business

There are a lot of benefits when you use Twitter for business. When you’re doing Twitter marketing, you can expect a high chance of getting a wider audience that could turn into customers.

To add to that, the platform can also help build your brand’s image through interactions and engagement with users.

Here are some other advantages that you can get out when you use Twitter to promote your business.

Lets You Spy On Your Competitors

Do you want to know what your competitors are doing? Twitter is a great tool to spy on them.

Twitter will show their activities and how they relay their messages to the public. This will help you gather more ideas on how you can better reach out to your customers.

Lets You Connect With More People

As I mentioned, Twitter allows you to easily connect with people on the platform. And in that case, you should take advantage (of this advantage!) by making sure you communicate well with your followers.

They will surely appreciate getting responses from you, especially if they have any inquiries about your products or services. In fact, customers who get immediate replies are more likely to transact with companies that are friendly and communicative.

Keep in mind that users on the platform are not there to see advertisements. Just like any social media platforms, users are on the platform itself to be… social.

So, avoid direct marketing and/or advertising. This can be deemed as annoying by users online.

What you need to do instead is to focus on a strategy that involves sharing valuable information and interacting with users.

Lets You Connect With Influencers

Influencers can have a significant impact on your brand. And influencers today are using all social media platforms to promote. This means that you’ll be able to find a handful of influencers on Twitter that can help you with your brand.

These influencers will help you connect with your target audience simply because of their influence.

It’s a great idea to form a partnership with an influencer to help you with your Twitter marketing.

Lets You Have a Conversation With Customers

Twitter is a great place to have conversations with your users. That’s why you should make it a priority to have a two-way communication system with your followers. Make sure that they can easily reach out to you.

It’s also a good idea if you answer their questions in a less formal way. Since you’re on Twitter, people here are more lax, so you need to act the same way.

This is also a great opportunity for you to encourage followers to send their feedback regarding your products and/or services. This is a great way for you to see where you can improve on when it comes to what you offer in the market.

Lets You Gain More Site Traffic

There’s a lot of traffic that you can get out of social media platforms, especially on Twitter. your website has a huge potential to gain more traffic across the globe when you share it on social media.

You can tweet a link to your website or blog several times just as long as its content is relevant. It’s also a good idea to have social buttons own your website. Encourage users to use these links when sharing your content on various platforms.

Lets You Announce Business Promotions & Deals

Most businesses rely on Twitter when they need that much-needed boost in sales. When you have upcoming (or even ongoing_ promos and deals, you can use Twitter to announce them.

If you’re also thinking of running contests or promos on the platform, make sure that you use a unique hashtag. This way, you can monitor all participants easily. The hashtag may also create excitement amongst users.

Twitter Tips

When sending tweets, keep them informative. And as much as possible, make sure that you don’t do direct marketing on the platform.

Further enhance your brand’s visibility by adding trending hashtags that are related to your business.

Take advantage of the updates on your feed — interact with them or simply retweet them. This is also a great way to keep your page updated. It’ll also give your followers a good sense of your values.
