Basic Twitter Terminologies

A tweet is a status update. Before, users are only limited to 140 characters.

However, on November 2017, Twitter changed the character limit to 280 characters.


Also known as RT, this is sharing a tweet by a particular user. You can share their tweet as is or you can also add a comment to your retweet through the “Quote Tweet” option.


Mention is like “tagging” on other social media platforms. This is when you mention a Twitter username to notify them of something.

All you need to do is type the @ symbol followed by the Twitter user’s username.


Hashtags are very popular on Twitter. A hashtag is a keyword or a phrase (with no spaces) with a # symbol.

The purpose of hashtags is to collect and sort out tweets that are related to a specific topic.

If you want to see latest updates on a certain topic, you can search for it using the hashtag.

Trending Topic

On Twitter, a trending topic is also referred to as “trends.” This could be a topic about a place, thing, person, or an idea. Whatever it may be, it’s trending simply because it’s currently being discussed by a lot of users on the platform.

Some businesses on the platform use hashtags to promote their brand. However, hashtags are not really that necessary to make a topic trend on the platform.

Direct Message (DM)

This is the messaging feature of Twitter. Basically, it’s a private conversation between you and a user.


Your followers are those who follow your account. Your followers will see your updates on their home feed.

The ones you follow are the ones who appear on your “Following” list on your profile. You’ll be able to see their posts on your feed.


This is the same as unfriending someone on other social media platforms. Once you unfollow a Twitter user, you will no longer see their tweets.

However, if the user you unfollowed is still following you, your tweets will still appear on their feed.


There will be a time when you’ll find a user annoying on Twitter. It happens!

Instead of unfollowing a user, you can just mute the user. By doing so, you won’t be able to see their regular updates on their feed.

By muting them, it saves you from hurting someone’s feelings when you unfollow them.


The block feature works the same for most social media platforms today. By blocking someone, you won’t be able to see them at all on the platform.

However, on Twitter, the user you blocked will be informed that you’ve blocked them when they view your profile.

On the other hand, if you’re the one who blocked a user, you’ll still be able to view their tweets by going to their profile and clicking on “View Tweets.”
