Moreover, 79% of consumers would rather watch a video about a product than read text copy about it. 84% have also been convinced to purchase a product by a video.

So it’s unsurprising many marketing experts are turning to YouTube for their campaigns.

Unfortunately, it means you’ll face stiff competition if you do the same.

Still, that’s no reason to avoid using YouTube for your online social media marketing. It has too much marketing potential for your — or any — business to ignore. 

It’s also not a given that you’ll be crushed by competitors just because you’re new to online social media marketing on YouTube. In fact, a lot of new and small businesses do quite well on the site.

An audience persona is an imaginary representation of your ideal customers based on your market research and data about your existing customers.

It’ll allow you to think of potential fans, followers, and customers as real people with wants and needs. Doing so will help you figure out what to offer them.

Try using analytics to make this task easier. YouTube has its own analytics tools for marketers seeking to learn more about their audience demographics.

You can learn a ton of valuable information about your subscribers. Information about where they live, their average age, the languages they speak, and how they interact with your brand on social media.

If they are, don’t worry. While it means you’ll have to compete with them on the platform, it also means you can learn and get ideas from them.

For example, you can take a look at their videos to see which ones got the most attention. See if there are videos they made that you’re certain you can improve on, for your own content.

What if you’re not sure who your direct competitors are on the platform, though?

Then you can conduct a competitive analysis to understand who your competitors are and what they’re doing on YouTube.

Competitive analysis is used to compare the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors within your market. 

It’ll give you an idea of what to expect in your industry, which can be a great help when you’re setting social media targets of your own and trying to spot marketing opportunities.

For example, it can help you discover the content niches in which your competitors are already dominant. The smart strategy would be to avoid challenging them in those areas.

Instead, you can focus on other content niches or topics in which customers are underserved.

4) Establish the Most Important Metrics

There are a lot of metrics you can use in online social media marketing. So much so that you may be overwhelmed trying to figure out which are most important.

Now different campaigns will naturally focus on different metrics. 

But there are some that tend to be vital to nearly every online social media marketing strategy. You may want to note them as part of my YouTube video marketing tips.

Here they are:

  • Reach – Reach on YouTube may be defined as the total number of unique users who saw your content. Why does reach matter? Because, as marketer Neil Patel puts it, it give you a context for other metrics. For example, you can only figure out engagement rates if you have a number for reach.
  • Engagement – Total number of social interactions for your content. On YouTube, these include likes, dislikes, and comments on videos.
  • CTR or Click-through Rate On YouTube, this typically means the number of viewers who clicked on your call to action or CTA button, link, or card. Again, this is a number that gets its context from Reach. To get your CTR, you’d have to divide the number of clicks on your CTA by the number of unique viewers you got.

 

5) Publish Engaging YouTube Video Content

Some of the strategies I gave you earlier can help you come up with it.
